Overview

Dorsum approached us to renew the visual appearance of the online distribution channels of the Hungarian State Treasury, Webkincstár and Mobilkincstár, in line with a brand identity change, and to rework the user interfaces at certain points in order to improve the customer experience.

The Hungarian State Treasury distributes government securities backed by a state guarantee, which makes it a key player in the retail bond market. The interfaces are therefore used by the widest possible retail audience, from regular investors to customers who log in once a year.

My role

As product designer I worked on the project from UX research through the design phase, together with two designer colleagues at Virgo. I was responsible for the UX/UI solutions and the visual renewal of Webkincstár. Aligning the two platforms was also my responsibility. I worked to make sure that the flows of Mobilkincstár and Webkincstár are built along the same UX logic, so that users do not find themselves in two different systems when they carry out the same task. I worked closely with the client side designer, the PM and the development team.

Challenges

Several generations at once

One of the main goals of the renewal was to make the products appealing to a younger audience, while making sure that the current, typically older users do not find them less comfortable to use.

Accessibility as a basic requirement

The interfaces had to reach as many users as possible, so we paid particular attention to following accessibility guidelines.

Design and development running in parallel

The visual renewal had to be done in a short time, and we had to deliver to the developers while the design work was still going on. This meant building the UI components in a way that stayed consistent throughout.

Brand identity constraints

For the visual renewal we had to adapt the fixed brand identity of the Hungarian State Treasury to digital interfaces, which left us limited room to move.

Design solution

1. Research and discovery

Stakeholder interviews

We ran in depth interviews with the heads and experts of various departments of the Treasury to understand the business goals and the problems of the current systems.

Usability tests

We tested the existing interfaces to identify the most important user pain points. We involved users of different ages and different levels of digital experience, so we could see how they use the system and where they get stuck.

User journey mapping

We mapped the flows along user journeys, which also helped us uncover the differences between the two platforms.

2. UX/UI design and prototyping

Beside the visual renewal we optimized the following key flows.

  • Registration and log in

  • Account opening

  • Government bond information and product selector

  • Transaction flows, including buying, selling, securities transfer and money transfer

  • Investment and portfolio management

  • Transaction history and electronic account statements

  • Customer service features, including in person administration, appointment booking and cash withdrawal

  • Notifications and messages

  • Settings

3. Design system

We built the design system elements of the interfaces based on the brand identity manual of the Hungarian State Treasury. This made sure that the new appearance meets the visual guidelines of the institution while it is also extended with modern components.

Results

After the renewal Webkincstár and Mobilkincstár work along the same logic, so users get the same experience regardless of screen size. The clean, user friendly appearance meets the institutional brand identity and current digital expectations at the same time.
